On-Line Tutorials and Training Materials

  • Basics of Remote Sensing from Satellite. An on-line introduction to the principles used in the NOAA AVHRR and GOES Imager instruments prepared by the Forecast Products Development Team (FPDT) at the Office of Research Applications.
  • Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation and Analysis. This is the web based version of a CD-rom. Written by Nicholas M. Short Jr. (GSFC/Applied Information Sciences Branch. Very extensive and complete, focusing mainly on imagery from sensors in the visible and near-infrared part of the spectrum. Updated May 1999
  • Recent publications and papers from the Office of Research and Applications/Operational Products Development Branch. Focused on NOAA satellite imagery. On-line only; Acrobat PDF files.
  • Introduction to GOES I-M. An on-line tutorial describing the sensor and data changes that began with the launch of GOES-8, prepared by the Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology (RAMM) Team (NESDIS) at CIRA. Includes examples of of improved GOES-8 data versus that of GOES-7.
  • GOES I-M 3.9um Channel on-line Tutorial, prepared by the NESDIS RAMM Team. (See above).
  • Advanced GOES Image Interpretation. An on-line tutorial prepared by the NESDIS RAMM team.
  • Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer An overview of the AVHRR instrument characteristics, prepared by the USGS EROS Data Center, to aid users of EDC archived AVHRR data.
  • Satellite Meteorology An on-line, multimedia instructional module in remote sensing. Prepared by the WW2010 Project, University of Illinois.
  • El Nino An on-line, multimedia instructional module providing a background about El Nino, conditions responsible for its occurrence and impacts. Prepared by the WW2010 Project, University of Illinois.
