PROJECT STATUS: This web site, the Atlas of the Flora of New England, formerly hosted at the Harvard University Herbaria, has been revised and transferred here for the foreseeable future. Work on the next installment (corresponding to volume 3 of Flora North America) is in progress. A draft of the text will appear here before submission for publication in Rhodora and eventual posting here. (6 August 2008).

Introduction to the Web Version

This web edition of the Atlas of the Flora of New England will be an ongoing updated document. Use the links at the top of each page to access the available sections of the atlas. We welcome information on vouchered county records not reflected in this atlas and other suggested changes or corrections. The first four installments have been published in Rhodora (the journal of the New England Botanical Club) in Volume 98, No. 893 on pages 1-79 (Winter 1996 [April 1997]), Volume 100, No. 902 on pages 101-233 (Spring 1998 [August 1998]), Volume 102, No. 909 on pages 1-119 (Winter 2000 [Feb. 2000]), and Volume 109, No. 939, on pages 237-360 (Summer 2007 [Sept. 2007]). The maps are updated automatically on this site via our database as new vouchered records are brought to our attention.

A web application that produces dot distribution maps on-the-fly from our database has been developed for this atlas by Angelo. The New England background maps for the application are adapted from a more detailed custom map provided generously by Ray Sterner whose map web site is at: http://fermi.jhuapl.edu/states/. The maps are in color and show topography. Lowest elevations are green and higher elevations become progressively more brown with the highest elevations purplish and white. The distributions reflect the most current state of our database. We invite curators and other researchers who are aware of herbarium records not reflected in our database to notify us of these records by e-mail. We only need to know the taxon and the particular herbarium where the voucher is located.
