Trees for South Dakota replaces Trees of South Dakota (EC 566) a very popular publication that has been out of print for several years. More than 60 trees are described within the book, most of which have full color pictures, color zone maps and informative text. A key is provide to aid readers in identifying unknown trees. The book is indexed by common and botanical names and includes the Lakota name of trees that are native in the state. Botanical line drawings of the tree's leaves are also included on each page.

Each page includes a full color picture of the tree in summer, zone map and icons which provide information as to tree size, growth rate, alkaline soil and drought tolerance and suitability for planting near power lines.

Favorable planting locations in the state are shaded in green, areas shaded in yellow are marginal and areas shaded in red are unfavorable. If a tree is native to parts of South Dakota, those areas of the map will be shaded in blue. Icons for growth rate and alkaline soil adaptability and drought tolerance are also shaded in green, yellow and red to show trees well adapted, marginal or poorly adapted to these conditions respectively. Small icons are also provided if the featured tree has especially attractive leaves, flowers, fleshy or dry fruit and bark.

Descriptive information is provided for each of the trees featured in the book. The text describes basic cultural requirements for good growth, significant features, pest problems if any and a description of some of the important cultivars that are commonly available.
