Farm Structure & Finance
Overview
This section provides a statistical portrait of the structure and financial
status and performance of U.S. farm operators, their households, and farm
businesses. Each year, ARMS collects information from farmers to determine
the financial situation of farm and ranch businesses. These data provide
the only national perspective on the annual changes in the economics of production
agriculture. The survey data also are used to determine the characteristics
and financial situations of farm operator households, including information
on farm debt, management strategies, and off-farm income.
Users can get summary standard financial statements (income statement, balance
sheet, and financial ratios) as well as structural characteristics (such as
the number, age, and years of schooling of farm operators) for various classifications
of farms for production years beginning in 1996. Key financial information
includes income for farm operator households and family farms, wealth, and
financial position.
The data can be summarized by region, farm typology, size of operation as
measured by sales, age of operator, and type of farm business as measured by
the primary commodities produced by the operator.
