Events and Updates

Photographs representing nearly a century's worth of creative output from the renowned Scurlock studio form the backbone of a new exhibition celebrating the legacy of a family of photographers and presenting a vivid portrait of black Washington, D.C., in all its guises — its challenges and its victories, its dignity and its determination.

With more than 100 images by one of the premiere African American studios in the country, "The Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise" is a collaboration between NMAAHC and the National Museum of American History. Open Jan. 30 through Nov. 15, 2009. Visit the exhibition at the National Museum of American History.
