All life depends on water. Safe drinking water is mandated by 1996
amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act; clean water in lakes, rivers,
streams, and aquifers is mandated by the 1972 Clean Water Act; and safe,
dependable, and abundant food and fiber depend upon safeguarding our Nation’s
soil and water resources.
Agricultural production systems that sustain and protect our national
water resources while satisfying our needs for clean water and a safe,
dependable food and fiber supply are paramount national issues. Agriculture, however, is identified as a
major non-point source of water contamination and it must, therefore, improve
water quality and utilize water more efficiently.
