Southern Research Station Scientists Invited Speakers at AAAS
Asheville,NC -- Two SRS researchers -John Stanturf, project leader of the Center for Forest Disturbance Science in Athens, GA, and Michele Schoeneberger, project leader of the National Agroforestry Center, were invited to give presentations at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) held February 15-19, in San Francisco, CA. The theme of the 2007 meeting is "Science and Technology for Sustainable Well-Being."
Stanturf's presentation, "Bioenergy from the Forest: Can It Be Made Sustainable?" was part of a session on "Renewable Energy from Biomass: Technology, Policy, and Sustainability." He provided a preliminary answer as to whether forests can sustainably provide feedstocks for bioenergy by answering three questions: Is there enough biomass available to make a difference, and how would it be used? What are the consequences of an increased use of biomass for energy? Under what conditions could bioenergy from the forest be sustainable?
Schoeneberger presented as part of a session title Taming Agroindustry?" Her presentation, "Measuring and Restoring Connectivity in Agricultural Landscapes,' discussed how incorporating vegetated buffer zones into intensively cultivated and/or grazed lands connects the 3 Ps (processes, people, and programs) to create more ecologically sound and cost-effective conservation efforts.
