Return to Backyard Conservation Home Page Return to Backyard Lesson Home Page Team Flight Module Summary The Team Flight Module is designed to inspire a sense of stewardship and respect for migratory birds and to empower students to take personal action to conserve their local habitats. Elementary students gain an introductory understanding of birds and their habitats. By learning about local birds in the classroom, they can then identify the birds and their habitats in the wild. Middle school students investigate deeper into birds and their habitats through hands-on inquiry, teamwork, and exploration of local ecosystems, whether on a nearby Corporate Lands for Learning, such as Bayer Corporation's Pittsburgh Site, a schoolyard or backyard. The core of the module is the Field Journals, which lead students and instructors through an inquiry-based field study of four different habitats to discover the interdependence of birds and plants. In addition, there are optional pre-and post-visit lessons to complement the study visits. Students are encouraged to conduct a follow-up visit in spring to the habitat stations to investigate the affect of seasons on the habitat and wildlife. In addition, students participating in Wings of Wonder will conduct the migration series and track species with the assistance of schools and partners in Central America via the Internet. A Bayer Pittsburgh enrichment activity focusing on nesting birds through use of a nest box camera allows students in both North and Central America to observe nesting and use Bayer's database to conduct research.
