Pandemic Flu Summit

The U.S. Department of Public Health & Human Services has called upon all 50 states to hold a “summit” meeting on pandemic influenza preparedness in 2006. The summits are intended to help state and local officials prepare for the threat posed by the H5N1 avian flu virus.

The summits are part of a federal strategy to engage key stakeholders—including schools, businesses, health-care professionals, and faith-based organizations—in preparedness planning.

Montana will hold its pandemic flu summit on May 23, as part of the annual Governor’s Conference on Emergency Preparedness. Key federal officials are expected to attend. The conference also will include panels on agri-terrorism and lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina, as well as additional public health workshops.
