Summer Internship Positions 2009

Spend the summer at USDA’s Economic Research Service in Washington, DC as an Economist, Economics Assistant, or IT Specialists.

Economist/Economics Assistant
(multiple positions)

Summer internships will be focusing on economic research.

During your internship, you will:

  • Conduct economic research, or
  • Assist a senior economist in conducting research.

Minimum requirement: one course in economics.
Preferred: third or fourth year economics major, or graduate student in economics.

IT Specialist: Web
Summer internship will focus on web design and development.

During your internship, you will:

  • Assist in the visual, functional, and interactive design of the agency's external web site and intranet.
  • Create stimulating, multimedia user interfaces, including the design development of audio/visual products.
  • Perform quality assurance to ensure the web site is meeting user needs.

IT Specialist: Web
Summer internship will resolve application design problems and web security as identified and appropriate.

During your internship, you will:

  • Address ERS web application security and perform quality assurance tasks.

IT Specialist: GIS Analyst

During your internship, you will:

  • Create cartographic products for ERS publications.
  • Perform spatial analysis for research projects.
  • Populate the GIS Team’s spatial data repository with standardized spatial data layers.

Note: Housing and transportation to/from the D.C. area will not be paid by ERS.

Applicant Qualifications
Candidates must meet all the following criteria:

• Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
• Applicants must be planning to continue their education in the next year.
• Because an internship is an "excepted service appointment," candidates must be a citizen of the United States or of a country allied with the United States in a defense treaty agreement or exempted by Congress. See detailed information on Federal employment of non-citizens. Non-citizens must have either a green card indicating lawful admittance or another form of authorization to be employed (H-1B visa or Employment Authorization Document). Please note: The internship must be consistent with any stipulations on visas or employment authorizations from their schools about the type of employment for which the student is authorized.

  • Copy of your most recent transcript; student copy is acceptable. (Please note courses to be completed by Spring 2009, and fax your transcript if it can’t be e-mailed with the application.)
  • Form OF-306 Declaration for Federal Employment
  • Veteran’s Preference- submit your DD-214
    (if applicable.)
