Description: An ongoing screening trial is testing nine herbicide treatments for establishing planted cherrybark oak (Quercus falcata var. Pagodaefolia Ell.) on the loessial bluff forests in weutern Mississippi. The test treatments include tree injection (TordonTM RTU) and two rates of two soil-active pelleted herbicides (VelparTM and SpikeTM) applied both as broadcast treatments before planting and as inter- row banded treatments at the time of planting. Seedling and competition measurements have been made for 3 years. Preliminary results show that the application of Spike (tebuthiuron) at 2 lb active ingredient per acre in 24-inch bands yielded seedling volumes significantly greater than those on the untreated plots after 3 years, but not greater than other tested herbicide treatments. Further competition control treatments for vines and shrubs appear necessary.
