Description: Since 1960, acreage of commercial forest has declined by 6 percent, or about one-half million acres, in this 35-county area and now totals 7.4 million acres. During this period, volume of growing stock increased by 616 million cubic feet, to 7.3 billion cubic feet. Hard- woods accounted for almost two-thirds of the net gain. About 1 million acres have been artificially regenerated since 1960, over 70 percent of which is located south of the Altamaha River. In 1970, net growth of growing stock totaled 414 million cubic feet and exceeded removals by 11 percent. South of the Altamaha River removals of pine exceeded growth by 26 percent, and softwood-inventory in this area has been reduced by 12 percent during the remeasurement period.
