Description: This publication describes many grasses, grasslike plants, forbs, and shrubs that inhabit longleaf pine-bluestem range. The species vary widely in importance; most produce forage palatable to cattle, some are noxious weeds, and others are valuable indicators of trends in range condition. All are abundant enough on certain sites, however, to require identification for accurate evaluation of grazing resources. Each species is described, its value as food for cattle and wildlife assessed, and its geographic range indicated. Line drawings show salient taxonomic features of species mentioned briefly as well as of those described fully. To aid identification of plants without floral parts, descriptions stress vegetative characters that are peculiar to each species, but detailed botanical descriptions have also been provided. Scientific names are those used by the U.S. Forest Service Herbarium, Washington, D.C. Most common names are from Kelsey and Dayton (1942)) but some have been taken from Little (1954) and Wolff (1954); all references consulted are listed in the bibliography.
