Description: Total utilization of our harvested timber is increasingly important. Residues which were once wasted and expensive to remove or destroy are now major sources of income. Slabs and edgings in the sawmill industry are an example. Although several studies have dealt with the volume of these residues, most, if not all, involved measurement of the outturn at the sawmill. An estimate of the portion of a log that goes into slabs and edgings, as well as kerf, can also be obtained directly from some of the log rule formulae. This paper illustrates how the International and Scribner h g Rule formulae can be used to estimate the volumes of slabs, edging, and kerf in saw logs, as well as 1-inch boards.
