Current Research

  • Ecosystem carbon cycling at the FACTS-II Aspen FACE experiment in Rhinelander, WI, and the Huron Mountain Club near Big Bay, MI, with RWU scientists.
  • Quantification of carbon sequestration in midwest landscapes with an emphasis on carbon credit derivation.
  • Design of assistance and stand/soil characterization of the newly built Houghton rhizotron.

Why is This Important

Quantifying and describing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration in forests will provide an important political and ecological tool in the latter half of this century.

Future Research

  1. Effects of the invasive earthworm, Lumbricus terrestris, on trace GHG emissions in an experimental forest rhizotron.
  2. Development of an interactive carbon credit calculator for forest/agriculture owners and managers.
  3. Descriptive work on invasive Norway maple (Acer platanoides) root systems, focusing on competition and carbon sequestration.
