Women's History Month: Julie Connor

Julie Connor is currently serving as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Verification, Compliance, and Implementation (VCI).

A 27-year veteran of the Foreign Service, Ms. Connor's assignments have included Bogota, Colombia (twice); Santiago, Chile; Tel Aviv, Israel (twice); Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Jakarta, Indonesia; Guatemala City; and Asuncion, Paraguay. She also headed up the U.S. Embassy’s public diplomacy efforts in Gaza from 2000 to 2001. In Washington, she has been a Senior Advisor and Acting Deputy Director for the Department’s Office of International Women’s Issues, served as the Deputy Director of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy; and was the desk officer for France, Spain, and Portugal with the former United States Information Agency (USIA).

In her last overseas assignment in Bogota, Ms. Connor headed the Narcotics Affairs Section managing a budget of $460 million, a staff of 600, and a fleet of 200 helicopters and spray planes. In Santiago, Ms. Connor headed the Public Affairs Section, served as Acting Deputy Chief of Mission for 7 months, and briefly was Charge.

Ms. Connor has been the recipient of numerous State Department and USIA awards, including two performance awards and three Superior Honor Awards. She serves as the coordinator for Executive Women at State, an informal group of senior State Department women that promotes the role of career women at the State Department.
