Welcome to the NCI caBIG® Knowledge Center Web Infrastructure
This knowledge infrastructure is a collection of knowledge management resources used by the caBIG® Knowledge Centers. Knowledge Centers are NCI funded organizations that offer expertise and support related to domains and tools in the caBIG® program. To learn more about caBIG®, visit the caBIG®Community Website
Any visitor can browse Knowledge Centers resources without an account. To edit wiki pages, add forum postings, reports defects and bug requests, and download tool code, you will need an account. Once assigned, your login and password can be used across multiple Knowledge Centers. Please use your professional e-mail account when signing up; if your e-mail domain is not recognized, you may be contacted by NCICB Applications Support for more information. Visit Access Account Request Form to request an account.

Overview of Knowledge Resources
Each Knowledge Center maintains the following knowledge management resources:
- MediaWiki pages, like this one, are used to describe each Knowledge Center's mission, services, frequently asked questions, and other domain-related knowledge. These include information pages related to caBIG tools for both end users and developers.
- Knowledge Center Forum Index (phpBB3) - Discussion formats allow visitors to post general questions and comments related to each Knowledge Center's domain, and questions and comments related to each tool under the Knowledge Center's stewardship: with one for the most current released version of each tool, and one for the development version of the tool.
- Knowledge Center Bug Tracking System (Bugzilla) - This central bug tracker allows users and developers to report defects and request features for specific tools and versions. In this system, feature requests are treated like defects (aka "bugs"). Use the Search for or Report a Bug functions to search for and/or report both defects and feature requests.
- Knowledge Center Development Code Repository - This repository is for developers that wish to participate in open source development efforts.
Benefits of these Resources
Some have asked why this new infrastructure is being introduced, given existing resources such as GForge, CVS and the community website.
- A key priority of this infrastructure was streamlining the account management process across resources. Instead of having one account for one resource and another account for another, this infrastructure accepts one login and password across Knowledge Centers and across resources.
- MediaWiki is well established in the existing caBIG user community, including several developer teams. It is well-suited to community use, with a well-documented and widely-used syntax and a range of external training and support options. Furthermore, it is open source, and can be used without restriction, regardless of the size of the user community and nature of its use, commercial, academic or government.
- The phpBB3 Forum resource is a widely used open source forum application, with extensive documentation available. Unlike the current GForge system, this resource is most likely to be familiar to the growing caBIG end-user community. It has a simple and intuitive interface that is easy for use, even for novice end users.
- Bugzilla is one of the best open source tools available for defect reporting and bug requests - it was built from the ground up to support open source community development.
- Subversion is the most widely used open-source tool available for caBIG-specific needs. It allows binary diffs, important for use in the caBIG development environment; and allows branch level permissions for fine-tuning of security within each project.
