This compact disc of anthracite mining ballads documented by George Korson ("the folklorist of the coal fields") presents a pioneering work in occupational folklore. Recorded on location in the hard-coal region of Pennsylvania as part of the Library of Congress' first post-World War II expedition, these performances preserve survivors of a minstrelsy which, like a seam of coal, ran through the mining life in the latter half of the past century. Reissue produced by Bob Carlin. 14 tracks on this CD include: Down, Down, Down ( Rose Maddox ); The Avondale Mine Disaster; Me Johnny Mitchell Man; Boys on the Hill; On Johnny Mitchell's Train; Rolling on the Rye Grass; The Old Miner's Refrain; John J. Curtis; A Celebrated Workingman; When the Breaker Starts Up Full Time; Union Man; The Miner's Doom; Down in a Coal Mine; The Shoofly Price: $17.00 Availability: Usually ships in 3-4 business days.
