A basic understanding of oil shale and tar sands and U.S. oil shale and tar sands resource development issues is important to informed participation in the EIS process. The Oil Shale and Tar Sands Guide section provides an introduction to oil shale and tar sands and U.S. oil shale and tar sands resources, and some of the issues faced in development of these resources in the western United States. The Oil Shale and Tar Sands Guide includes the following resources:

• Basic information about oil shale and tar sands resources;
• Photos of oil shale and tar sands and associated recovery activities;
