Now Available - Helen Hulick Beebe Auditory-Verbal Practice Scholarships!
The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) is pleased to announce the 2009 Helen Hulick Beebe Auditory-Verbal Practice Scholarship, made possible by grants from the Helen Beebe Speech & Hearing Center. Ten scholarships of $1,000 each (USD) will be awarded to support the professional development critical to the success of listening and spoken language practice.
The goal of the listening and spoken language approach is for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to grow up in typical learning and living environments and to become independent, participating citizens in mainstream society. These scholarships honor the legacy of Helen Hulick Beebe, one of the pioneers of the listening and spoken language approach and an internationally known speech/language pathologist and educator of the deaf, who devoted her life to bringing sound to the lives of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. It was a passion of Beebe’s to train professionals, enabling them to provide a listening and spoken language outcome for children and their families.
The Helen Hulick Beebe Auditory-Verbal Practice Scholarship is designed to support currently certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS) in their mentoring of certification candidates and certification candidates who have expressed an interest in taking the LSLS exam to gain professional development.

| 2009 LOFT Program in Washington, D.C.!
AG Bell announces the 2009 Leadership Opportunities for Teens (LOFT) program July 5-9 in Washington, D.C. One of AG Bell's most widely acclaimed programs, LOFT is designed specifically for teens who are deaf or hard of hearing and use spoken language.
Space is limited. The program is for teens ages 15-18. Tuition is $300 and scholarship opportunities are available. Click here for more information and to download an application.

To help parents with a newly diagnosed child navigate the myriad of procedures and options available, this issue focuses on early intervention and provides information on the significance of hearing loss, options for language development and what to expect in the early years of a child’s language development. The Symposium, to be held July 23-25 in St. Louis, Mo., will focus on Executive Function -- a critical aspect for children to learn how to learn. An understanding of Executive Function can help professionals identify where cognitive breakdowns occur, and may also help highlight a child or adult's areas of strength and talent.
