Working together, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) and the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM) achieved recognition for the subspecialty of hospice and palliative medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Beginning in 2008, cooperating boards within the ABMS will offer a subspecialty certificate in hospice and palliative medicine. A parallel certification will be offered by cooperating boards within the AOA. AAHPM will support ABHPM diplomates through the expiration of their ABHPM certificates.
