Diabetes Experts Issue New Recommendations for Inpatient Glycemic Control – Call for Systemic Changes in Hospitals Nationwide
New recommendations released today by a consensus group of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) are calling for major changes in the way health care professionals treat hospitalized patients with high blood glucose (sugar) levels. Errata to Online News regarding Surgery for Diabetes National Coverage Determination

In the Tuesday, May 5, 2009, edition of Online News, a correction should be noted to the article regarding Surgery for Diabetes National Coverage Determination.  Per Medicare, the article should read as follows:

Effective for services performed on and after February 12, 2009, CMS determines that open and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP), laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), and open and laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) in Medicare beneficiaries who have type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and a body mass index (BMI) <35 are not reasonable and necessary under section 1862(a)(1)(A) of the Social Security Act, and therefore are not covered by Medicare.

Effective for services performed on and after February 12, 2009, CMS determines that open and laparoscopic RYGBP, open and laparoscopic BPD/DS, and LAGB are covered for Medicare beneficiaries who have T2DM and a BMI ≥ 35. Additionally, CMS determines that T2DM is a comorbidity related to obesity as defined in Publication 100-03, National Coverage Determination Manual, Section 100.1.

In addition, the procedure must be performed at an approved facility. A list of approved facilities may be found on the CMS Web site at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicareApprovedFacilitie/BSF/list.asp#TopOfPage.

H1N1 Flu Update
This is to advise our attendees for the Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, that AACE is carefully monitoring events surrounding the outbreak of the swine flu. We are in touch with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Texas State Health Department, Houston health officials, the convention center and hotel to determine if there are any issues emerging that could affect the meeting or attendees. At the present time, there have been no signs of an outbreak of the flu in the Houston area or other signs for alarm. AACE will, however, continue to follow the situation on a daily basis and will advise Annual Meeting attendees of any issues of concern that may arise over the next week leading up to the meeting. We are taking special precautions with the full cooperation of the convention center and hotel to ensure that they are carefully monitoring their workers, including food handlers, to safeguard against any exposure for our attendees. We are optimistic that plans for the meeting will continue smoothly and uninterrupted by this unfortunate flu outbreak.
