RR Donnelley & Sons Promotes Employee Blood Pressure Control with Mission Possible
RR Donnelley & Sons (RRD), the world's premier provider of printing and business services, has joined Mission Possible to improve blood pressure control among its employees. In August 2006, RR Donnelley signed on to collaborate with NHLBI on a new heart disease prevention incentive program for RR Donnelley's thousands of U.S. benefit-eligible employees in more than 100 locations throughout the U.S.
Earlier in the year, RRD had initiated a health benefit incentive program, offering employees a free onsite health screening, which included blood pressure and cholesterol checks and a $600 annual discount on their health insurance premiums for completing a health risk questionnaire, administered by the University of Michigan, and following up with calls to a health coach to discuss health behavior changes. Approximately 80 percent of their employees had signed up for this program.
RR Donnelley expanded this program in 2007 to include spouses, as well as to introduce an additional $400 incentive for employees who agreed to participate in one of three special programs for hypertension management, cholesterol reduction, or physical activity.
As a first step in the collaboration, RR Donnelley distributed NHLBI educational materials to their employees, along with an introductory letter from NHLBI Director Betsy A. Nabel, M.D. In her letter, Dr. Nabel highlighted the importance of controlling heart disease risk factors, while also citing the serious consequences of unchecked hypertension and cholesterol levels. According to RR Donnelley, close to three out of every four of their employees have signed up for one of the three special programs (Cholesterol, Hypertension, or Fitness).
RR Donnelley has agreed to share data and/or outcomes from this program with NHLBI, consistent with its obligations under federal and state legislation concerning privacy of protected health information.
