Fashion in Peru Toni Frissell is principally remembered for her high-fashion photography for Vouge and Harper's Bazaar. She was an influential innovator who was apprenticed to Cecil Beaton and advised by Edward Steichen. Frissell's leap from fashion photography into war reportage echoed the desire of earlier generations of newswomen to move from the "soft news" of fashion and society pages into the "hard news" of the front page. On volunteering for the American Red Cross in 1941, Frissell said: "I became so frustrated with fashion that I wanted to prove to myself that I could do a real reporting job." Her work in war and fashion was both orignal and compelling.
