caBIG™ Imaging Program Participates in RSNA 2007 Meeting

The National Cancer Institute (NCI)'s cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG™) Imaging Workspace was created to address the imaging informatics challenges faced by the research and clinical trials communities. To this end the Imaging Workspace has in the past two years developed several imaging tools and standards, and is now on the cusp of promoting adoption activities for the same. This progress was recently shared at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2007 Annual Meeting, which took place from November 25-30, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois.

Subject matter experts from the Imaging Workspace provided several lectures to the RSNA audience. Some talks focused on the applications and standards the Imaging Workspace has developed, such as:

  • The Annotations and Imaging Markup Developer (AIM)
  • The eXtensible Imaging Platform (XIP) tool builder
  • The RadLex Research Playbook
  • Core Middleware
  • The National Cancer Imaging Archive (NCIA), which showcased its new web-based support for image markup and collaboration.

Other talks elaborated on broader issues of relevance to the radiology imaging community, such as:

  • Role-based access to images in grid environments
  • Ontologies in imaging
  • Computer-aided detection in clinical trials
  • Network accessible reading of clinical trials cases
  • Multi-site collaboration for cancer change analysis
  • VirtualPACS, and
  • The potential use of the Imaging Workspace's tools in real clinical trials.

Presentations were given to introduce the workspace's recently initiated DICOM Ontology and Query Formulation projects. Additionally, lectures were supplemented with demos that illustrated the uses of XIP, Core Middleware, and AIM via "Multi-site Clinical Trial with Central Data Review," "Grid Security," "VirtualPACS," "Federated Query Processing," and "DICOM Data Service Access by the CERR Application" use cases.

This year the Imaging Workspace also invited guests from cooperative groups or relevant areas of industry to participate in specially guided tours of the workspace's demo area. These tours, given by either Dr. Eliot Siegel, Workspace Lead and Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Maryland, or Dr. Carl Jaffe, Branch Chief of Diagnostic Imaging at the NCI's Cancer Imaging Program, allowed guests to see how the workspace's mature tools and practices directly relate to their areas of interest in radiology imaging, and how caBIG™ Imaging technology can be leveraged to facilitate centralized review for clinical trials.
