Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research was founded
in 1982. Jack Whitehead’s defining vision was
that by giving the most creative minds in science the
resources they need to follow their instincts, his gift
would accelerate scientific discovery and benefit humankind.
Much of Whitehead Institute’s success can be attributed
to its commitment to seeding the most promising, nascent
projects. Gifts from individual donors to the Annual
Fund support Whitehead scientists as they develop research
projects not yet ready for conventional funding - the
best of which lead to discoveries that change the very
direction of science.
Philanthropic gifts from corporations and foundations
also provide critical seed money for new research initiatives.
These partnerships have paved the way for some of the
most exciting and fruitful advances in biomedical research
today - from genetics and cancer to developmental biology
and nanotechnology.
