American Book Covers 1830-1900

blue covered bookred covered bookA pictorial guide to the changes in design and technology found in the covers of American books between 1830 and 1900.

The adoption of book cloth glued onto a prepared case was a turning point in the history of publishing. It allowed publishers to present their books to the public in the form of small advertising posters.

Historically these covers encompass the opening out of the West, the Civil War, the 'gilded age' and into the sophistication of the turn of the 20th century. The guide is organized by decades.
