The 1920s were years rich in cultural, social, and economic growth and change in America. Yet until recently scholarship tended to neglect the era. And even as an impressive body of research has accumulated, an earlier shallow image of that time has lingered in many texts. The twelve essays in this volume, originally presented to a 1995 Library of Congress symposium, seek to reassess the history of the 1920s and, in particular, the presidency of Calvin Coolidge, in accordance with the latest research. The essays examine broad economic and social trends of the time, and, of course, Calvin Coolidge himself, that unusual personality who held the presidency during most of that era.
