Upcoming Deadlines

  • EPA Office of Water, Ph.D.-level Epidemiologist Wanted (11/30/2008). The Office of Water (OW) is located in Washington, D.C., and supports the development of new water quality criteria for recreational waters in the US EPA, OW. Candidates for an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment should be currently employed by a federal, state, or local government entity (or an institution of higher learning) to work with federal scientists and policy makers. This person must be a Ph.D.-level epidemiologist with an interest in translating the results of epidemiological and other research studies in federal policy. The EPA is in the process of conducting a large number of research projects to support the development of new water quality criteria for pathogens and pathogen indicators. Candidates must be able to analyze and interpret data from such epidemiological studies, communicating public, states, stakeholders and EPA senior leadership, while still working within a multidisciplinary team. This assignment is a temporary two year position with a possible extension for up to two years; the preferred start date is January 2009. Please respond in writing by providing a statement (no more than three pages) describing your interest and qualifications for this position, including a description of the benefit to your current organization; please be sure to include a full CV and list of references.

  • Post-doctoral Fellow and Graduate Student positions to study gene-environment interactions are currently open at the University of Cincinnati as part of a National Institute Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) training grant. Research training will be accomplished using a team approach—to integrate an understanding of genetic diversity, epigenetic alterations, gene-expression microarrays, high-throughput genomics, biostatistics, biomarkers, and exposure assessment approaches.   • Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) — The Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF) has a rich history of attracting outstanding individuals from a variety of academic disciplines and career paths who are interested in, and committed to, excellence in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. By drawing graduate students from diverse backgrounds, the PMF program develops talent to meet the future challenges of public service.
    To be eligible for the class of 2009, students must complete graduate degree requirements between September 1, 2008 through August 31, 2009, and be nominated by their school.   • Office of Research and Development Post Doctoral Program — EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) seeks candidates to fill four-year, post-doctoral research positions. Positions focus on the exposure and effects of environmental contaminants on human health and the environment. The preferred candidate will have earned a Ph.D. within the last five years or will have it awarded prior to their Federal employment start date.  The duty station will be based on the particular disciplinary focus of the candidate and the overall requirements of the program.   • EPA National Network for Environment Management Studies (NNEMS) — NNEMS is a comprehensive fellowship program managed by EPA's Office of Environmental Education. The purpose of the NNEMS Program is to provide students with practical research opportunities and experiences. Each participating headquarters or regional office develops and sponsors projects for student research. The projects are narrow in scope to allow the student to complete the research by working full-time during the summer and/or part-time during the school year. Research fellowships are available in Environmental Policy, Regulation, and Law; Environmental Management and Administration; Environmental Science; Public Relations and Communications; and Computer Programming and Development.
    NNEMS fellows receive a stipend at a level determined by the student's level of education and the duration and location of the research project. Fellowships are offered to undergraduate and graduate students. Students must meet certain eligibility criteria.
