Mechanism | Activity Code | Description | Contacts |
Research Project Grant | R01 | R01s support investigator-initiated research projects within the mission of one of the NICHD program areas
Small Research Grant | R03 | R03s support small investigator-initiated research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources within the mission of one of the NICHD program areas. Examples include pilot or feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology and/or development of new research technology.
Conference Grant (R13) | R13 | R13s provide limited support for scientific meetings, workshops, symposia, and conferences within the NICHD program areas. Applicants must obtain NICHD's approval prior to submission (see announcement). In the cover letter, applicants should request secondary assignments from other NIH Institutes and Centers with programmatic interest in the conference. In general, the NICHD awards up to $6,000 for grants with primary assignment to NICHD and up to $3,000 for grants with secondary assignment to NICHD. | Eugene Hayunga |
NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) | R15 | R15s support small research projects at colleges, universities and health professional schools that have not received significant NIH funding. It provides an opportunity for faculty at these schools to introduce undergraduates to research. | Eugene Hayunga |
Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award | R21 | R21s provide limited support for exploratory/developmental research projects that introduce novel scientific ideas, model systems, tools, agents, targets, and/or technologies. High-risk/high-payoff research is encouraged. | Extramural Research Contact: Eugene Hayunga Financial or Grants Management Contact: Bryan Clark |
Resource-Related Research Projects | R24 | R24s provide research infrastructure support. The NICHD does not accept unsolicited R24 applications at this time. Active announcements will be listed on the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page.
Education Projects | R25 | R25s provide support to develop and/or implement a program as it releates to a category in one or more of the areas of education, information, training, technical assistance, coordination, or evaluation.
NIH Clinical Trial Planning Grant Program | R34 | R34s support the planning of Phase III clinical trials, including activities such as the establishment of the research team, the development of tools for data mangement, and the finalization of the protocol. This mechanism is not intended to support collection of preliminary data or conduct of pilot studies. | Extramural Research Contact: Eugene Hayunga Financial or Grants Management Contact: Bryan Clark |
Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grant (Phase I/Phase II) | R43/ R44 | R43/R44 is a two-phase mechanism that supports a small business concern performing innovative research. The first phase (R43) establishes the technical/scientific merit and feasibility of the project, and the second phase (R44) develops the project's commercially viability.
Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Grant (Phase I/Phase II) | R41/ R42 | R41/R42 is a two-phase mechanism that supports innovative research conducted cooperatively by a small business concern and a research institution. The first phase (R41) establishes the technical/scientific merit and feasibility of the project, and the second phase (R42) develops the project's commercial viability.
Program Project Grant | P01 | P01s encourage multidisciplinary investigation of a complex problem relevant to NICHD's mission and facilitate economy of effort, space, and equipment. P01s consist of at least three interrelated projects and, often, core resources. Synergy among the projects should result in greater scientific contributions than if each project were supported separately. | Depending on the application's subject matter, communications should be directed to relevant program staff or: James Hanson Florence Haseltine Gilman Grave Michael Weinrich |
Center Core Grant | P30 | P30s support research centers in selected scientific areas. NICHD accepts P30 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for NICHD active P30 RFAs.
Specialized Research Center Grant | P50 | P50s support research centers in selected scientific areas. NICHD accepts P50 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for NICHD active P50 RFAs.
Research Cooperative Agreement | U01 | U01s are similar to R01s, but involve NICHD program staff in a substantial scientific and management role. NICHD accepts U01 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for active U01 RFAs.
Cooperative Clinical Research | U10 | U10s support clinical evaluation of methods of therapy and/or prevention using a cooperative agreement. NICHD accepts U10 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for NICHD active U10 RFAs.
Cooperative Conference Grant / Conference Grant | U13 | U13s are similar to R13s but involve NICHD program staff in a substantial scientific and management role. U13s provide limited support for scientific meetings, workshops, symposia, and conferences within the NICHD program areas. Applicants must obtain NICHD's approval prior to submission (see announcement). In general, the NICHD awards up to $6,000 for grants with primary assignment to NICHD and up to $3,000 for grants with secondary assignment to NICHD. Only U.S. institutions or organization, including an established scientific or professional society, are eligible to apply.
Cooperative Research Program Project | U19 | U19s support multiple project cooperative agreements. NICHD accepts U19 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for NICHD active U19 RFAs. | Peer Review Contact: Robert Stretch |
Cooperative Specialized Research Center Grant | U54 | U54s support funding for a limited number of research centers to provide an arena for multidisciplinary interactions among basic and clinical scientists interested in establishing high quality research programs. The centers also serve as national resources for the career development of early-career investigators electing to pursue research in high priority areas. NICHD accepts U54 applications only in response to active RFAs. Check the Active Funding Opportunity Announcements page for NICHD active U54 RFAs. | Peer Review Contact: Robert Stretch |
