Work Group on Single and Multiple Project Grants (WGSMPG) Description
The NIDCD has established the Work Group on Single and Multiple Project Grants (WGSMPG). This group will advise the National Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NDCD) Advisory Council, and through it, the Director NIDCD, about the benefits and drawbacks (strengths/weaknesses, advantages/ disadvantages) of single project (R01) grants in contrast to multiple project (P01, P50 or P60) awards.

The charge to the WGSMPG was outlined in a letter of invitation extended to 19 participants. It asks them to provide an in-depth examination of the rationale for the nurture, development and continuing support of multiple project grants, and to define those kinds of research activities and conditions for which multiple project grants may be essential.

We encourage community-wide participation in this process. Based on your own experiences, you may wish to comment on any of the various questions found in the letter or to raise others. Please direct comments to the Executive Secretary, Dr. Craig Jordan. All responses will be shared with the WGSMPG before the face-to-face meeting on the NIH campus in August. Work group members will be available from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. EDT on August 13, 1998 to hear public testimony from persons wishing to present their views and comments directly. In addition, written comments will be summarized at that time before the WGSMPG enters into closed session on August 14, 1998. Details regarding the open session meeting site are available from Dr. Jordan.

The recommendations of the WGSMPG will be presented, in draft form, to the NDCD Advisory Council during the open session of their meeting on October 7, 1998. Additional comments or recommendations agreed upon by the Council will be incorporated into the final document before it is transmitted to the Director, NIDCD, Dr. James Battey.

The completed WGSMPG report will be available on the NIDCD Home Page in October. Additional information will be provided to you as various recommendations are implemented.

We greatly appreciate the enthusiasm with which the community responded to previous NIDCD initiatives and will value your input to the current process.

Donald H. Luecke, M.D.
Deputy Director, NIDCD
