The Sleep Well. Do Well. Star Sleeper Campaign has received a terrific boost from concerned partners in the fields of medicine, education, the non-profit sector, and the cartoon world. Here's who is helping kids get their zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzs.
American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
The AAP and its 55,000 members are dedicated to the health, safety, and well-being of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Pediatricians are in a key position to educate children and their parents about the importance of getting adequate sleep every night. They also have an important role in screening children for excessive sleepiness and sleep disorders. The AAP is working with the campaign to develop and disseminate educational materials for pediatricians to use in communicating with children and parents about healthy sleep. Over the course of the campaign, the AAP will work to help examine the science related to sleep problems in children and adolescents, among other activities.
American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)
The AASM is a professional membership organization dedicated to the advancement of sleep medicine and related research, with a particular emphasis on assuring quality care for patients with sleep disorders. AASM is working with the campaign to provide its members with tools and information that will facilitate their efforts to promote adequate healthy sleep for children.
Better Sleep Council (BSC)
Established in 1978, the BSC is a non-profit organization that works to educate the public about the importance of sleep to good health and quality of life. Supported by the mattress industry, the BSC provides consumers with information on how to improve sleep quality. The BSC is promoting the campaign's messages in its "Better Sleep Guide" and "Back to School" themed media tours, in which lifestyle expert Mary LoVerde provides parents with tips on how to help their children get a healthy night's sleep.
National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP)
The NAESP, founded in 1921, represents more than 28,000 elementary and middle school principals and other educators in the United States, Canada, and overseas. Its members serve more than 30 million children from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. The campaign was introduced to NAESP members at their 2002 annual convention. The NAESP is working with the campaign to identify "champions" in each state who will promote the campaign materials to their colleagues, as well as to teachers, children and parents.
National Association of School Nurses (NASN)
The National Association of School Nurses is a non-profit specialty nursing organization incorporated in 1979, which represents school nurses exclusively. NASN has over 11,000 members and 51 School Nurse Association Affiliates. The NASN improves the health and educational success of children and youth by developing and providing leadership to advance school nursing practice. School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. The NASN and its state affiliates are providing resources to their members to help reach school children and their parents with messages about the importance of adequate sleep for optimal health, school performance, and safety.
National Sleep Foundation (NSF)
The NSF is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public health and safety by achieving greater understanding of sleep and sleep disorders, and by supporting education, sleep-related research, and advocacy. NSF conducts a wide variety of programs designed to alert the public, healthcare providers, and policymakers about the importance of adequate sleep. NSF also works with sleep centers throughout the country as part of its Community Sleep Awareness Partners (CSAP) program, to provide education on sleep issues.
Paws, Inc.
Established in 1981, Paws, Inc. is "the house that Garfield built," with 57 artists, writers, and licensing business executives overseeing the work of the most in-demand cartoon cat in America. Jim Davis, creator of Garfield and Paws, Inc., says that, "It was simply irresistible to me to have Garfield involved in an activity that would not only benefit children, but that was also a perfect fit for the character; after all, sleeping is Garfield's second favorite activity." (Eating comes first!) Through the Star Sleeper Web site, the 48-page Fun Pad, and other media, Garfield is the official "spokescat" encouraging kids to sleep well
do well.
