NIAID is supporting a number of vaccine trials around the world with a variety of organizations, centers, partnerships, and programs.

The Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at the National Institutes of Health was established to facilitate research in vaccine development. The VRC is dedicated to improving global human health through the rigorous pursuit of effective vaccines for human diseases.
HIV Vaccine Trials Network

Formed in 1999 by NIAID, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is an international collaboration of scientists and educators searching for an effective and safe HIV vaccine. The HVTN mission is to facilitate the process of testing preventive vaccines against HIV/AIDS. Our organization conducts all phases of clinical trials, from evaluating experimental vaccines for safety and the ability to stimulate immune responses, to testing vaccine efficacy. Led by investigators and powered by collaborators, HVTN conducts its research through multicenter clinical trials in a global network of domestic and international sites. Organized by committee and intellectual discipline, the investigators develop, discuss, implement, analyze, and prioritize both vaccine design concepts and studies. Protocols are developed by HVTN investigators and include partnerships between vaccine developers, clinical experts, and biostatisticians. HVTN works closely with NIH staff in initiating, conducting, funding, and coordinating all vaccine development processes.
Partnership for AIDS Vaccine Evaluation

The Partnership for AIDS Vaccine Evaluation (PAVE) is a voluntary consortium of U.S. government agencies and U.S. government-funded organizations involved in HIV vaccine research. Members of PAVE include NIH, HIV Vaccine Trials Network, Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center, U.S. Military HIV Research Program, and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology

The Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI) was established by DAIDS as part of the Global HIV/AIDS Vaccine Enterprise. It aims to elucidate basic sciences questions and conduct early phase clinical trials of HIV vaccine candidate at clinical sites around the world. Dr. Barton Haynes of Duke University serves as the principle investigator of CHAVI’s scientific leadership group.
U.S. Military HIV Research Program

Established in 1985 to protect troops entering endemic HIV areas, the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (USMHRP) brings together scientists from the army, navy, and air force. DAIDS jointly plans and executes HIV/AIDS research projects with the USMHRP through an interagency agreement.
Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise

This is a virtual consortium of organizations committed to the development of a preventive HIV/AIDS vaccine. It will implement shared scientific plans, mobilize resources, and improve worldwide collaborations.
International AIDS Vaccine Initiative

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) was founded in 1996 to speed discovery of an HIV vaccine. It partners worldwide with private companies, academic institutions, and government agencies, such as NIH.
