The priority aim addressed by this measure is to reduce excessive antibiotic treatment through decreased empiric treatment of patients with pharyngitis.

After viral upper respiratory infection and otitis, acute pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis is the third most common illness diagnosed by U.S. pediatricians.

Group A beta streptococcal pharyngitis is uncommon in children younger than three years of age and rare in children younger than 18 months old.

Identify patients with pharyngitis diagnosis of 462.0 and 034.4. The medical record of each patient is reviewed to determine if the patient had either a rapid strep test or strep culture.

The suggested time period for data collection is a calendar month.
