The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) was established in 1984 to be the central focus for all cancer research at the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1988, UPCI was designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a comprehensive cancer center and has maintained that status. UPCI has extensive cancer programs in basic, clinical, translational, and population sciences research.
