MEDLARS® Management Section (MMS)

The primary focus of the MMS is database development, management, testing and quality assurance to foster expanded access of health information to health professionals and the general public.

MMS staff collaborate with National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), Office of Computing and Communications Systems (OCCS) and Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) staff to develop, test and support PubMed®, the NLM Gateway and the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), and provide customer service, training and user documentation for these and other NLM systems.

MMS staff are responsible for the following:

Database Training

• Distance Education

  Distance education resources provided by the NLM.

• Classroom Training

  Register for classes using the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Web site.

Licensing / Data Distribution

• Leasing Data from the National Library of Medicine

  Lease MEDLINE/PubMed journal citations, bibliographic records from the NLM catalog, toxicological, chemical or directory data, or UMLS Knowledge Sources.

• Unified Medical Language System (UMLS)

  Information about and access to the UMLS resources, including the Metathesaurus, the Semantic Network, SPECIALIST Lexicon and lexical tools and MetamorphoSys.

Database Support & Documentation

• NLM Technical Bulletin

  NLM's official channel for distributing news and information about NLM systems.

• Data, News and Update Information

  The latest news and statistics about NLM databases.

• MEDLINE/PubMed Resources Guide

  A comprehensive list of NLM resources about MEDLINE and PubMed.

• Customer Service

  Find frequently asked questions (FAQs) or send questions and comments about NLM's databases.
