of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region Regional
Medical Library Contract Awarded
--Renée Bougard, Associate Director
We are pleased to
announce that the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas
Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library has retained the Regional
Medical Library designation in the National Network of
Libraries of Medicine for the South Central Region (NN/LM
SCR). The five - year contract was awarded on May 1, 2001
and will end on April 30, 2006. The program consists of
five basic areas: network development and document
delivery, outreach to health professionals and special
populations, consumer health, technology, and education.
Evaluation of the NN/LM SCR programs and services, as well
as those developed and provided by subcontractors, will be
an integral component in this contract.
An additional outreach coordinator position has been
added to this contract, which will focus on outreach to
special populations to include, but not limited to,
Hispanics, African - Americans, Native American/American
Indians, the HIV/AIDS community. Outreach to special
populations will be a major focus of the contract. Many of
the publications produced by the NN/LM SCR and its outreach
subcontractors will be translated by a team of Spanish
translators and placed on the NN/LM SCR web site to meet
the growing need for Spanish language health information
resources. Outreach will also target specified health
professional groups each year, to include public health
professionals, specific allied health groups, nurses,
veterinarians, dentists, and alternative medicine
practitioners.
A number of awards and equipment opportunities will be
made available to Network members. These include access to
electronic consumer health information, access to
information for the public health community, technology
awareness conferences, library improvement projects, and
Internet connectivity projects.
The NN/LM SCR has a Regional Advisory Committee (RAC)
that serves in an advisory capacity to the staff in
identifying regional needs, populations, and existing
programs throughout the region, and in providing feedback
and evaluating programs and services. Kathryn Hoffman, MLS,
Director, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Medical
Library, Houston TX, will serve as the NN/LM SCR RAC Chair,
2001 - 2003.

NN/LM SCR Office
Flooded
On June 8, 2001, the
city of Houston suffered a devastating flood caused by
Tropical Storm Allison. The Street Level of the HAM-TMC
Library, where the NN/LM SCR offices were located, was
destroyed. Unfortunately, almost everything was lost.
Services to the region were temporarily affected.

the NN/LM SCR office (as well as the HAM-TMC library) will

What's New in
PubMed/Gateway?
Pubmed.gov
Now PubMed has a new
streamlined URL: http://pubmed.gov. The other URL
(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query)
is still functioning so it is not necessary to change
bookmarks or links.
PubMed's Journal Browser
Unique ISSN numbers are
often assigned to both the print and online versions of a
journal. As a result, the Journal Browser now displays both
the print and electronic ISSNs in its search results. Print
ISSNs are in the column called pISSN, and the electronic
ISSN is under eISSN. Also, clicking on the MEDLINE
abbreviation in the search results now searches by journal
title abbreviation instead of ISSN.
For more information, see: Nahin AM. Changes to the
PubMed® Journal Browser. NLM Tech Bull. 2001
May-Jun;(320):e9.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/mj01/mj01_new_journal_browser.html
AIDSLINE Citations Added
Now the unique AIDS and
HIV-related citations that were only available from the
former AIDSLINE database are in MEDLINE and PubMed. AIDS
meeting abstracts are available from the Gateway.
For more information, see: Benton N. AIDS-related
Citations Added to PubMed® and the NLM Gateway. NLM Tech
Bull. 2001 May-Jun;(320):e6.

Single Citation Matcher
As suggested by many
librarians, NLM has added a title words box to the Single
Citation Matcher in PubMed.
For more information, see: Nahin AM. Title Word
Search Added to Single Citation Matcher. NLM Tech Bull.
2001 May-Jun;(320):e5.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/mj01/mj01_single_citation_matcher.html
MEDLINE UI
The 8-digit UI format
will cease to be assigned to MEDLINE citations at the end
of the 2001 production year. For the 2002 production year,
UIs will be 9 digits long. NLM has selected the PubMed
Unique Identifier (PMID) as the unique number for all
records in PubMed. Already, the majority of PubMed display
formats (i.e. summary format) only displays the PMID. Users
should being using the PMID for identifying citations.
For more information, see Knecht L. Future of the
MEDLINE Unique Identifier. NLM Tech Bull. 2001
May-Jun;(320):e2.

Find Terms in Gateway
When a MeSH term with
multiple meanings is entered, a "Select a MeSH Term" screen
will display so the user can choose the correct term.

NLM Gateway Collections Updates
A chart showing when
the NLM Gateway Collections were last updated is available
(http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/revup/revup_pub.html#gw_update),
and a link was added on the Overview page.
