Animal Models to Support Research on Osteoimmunology

The Immunology and Immunotherapy Program, Center for Integrative Biology and Infectious Diseases (CIBID), conducted a  programmatic consultation to gain insight into the strengths and limitations of some animal models that could be useful to support osteoimmunology research.

Head and Neck Tissue Arrays

Overview

The  NIDCR is pleased to announce the Head and Neck Tissue Array (HNTA) Initiative. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Oral and Pharyngeal Cancer Branch, NIDCR, the Tissue Array Research Program (TARP), National Cancer Institute (NCI) and several contributing centers in 8 countries, namely the United States, China, Thailand, Argentina, Mexico, South Africa, India, and Japan.  Each center has contributed a number of paraffin blocks from patients bearing head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, mainly oral cancer, as well as several other control tissues from non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases.  A tissue microarray has been developed using samples from these sources. Investigators at both research intense and non-intense institutions, as well as foreign and domestic laboratories may request paraffin sections of the microarray. Although applicants are not required to be current NIDCR grantees, a high priority will be given to those who currently have an NIDCR grant studying head and neck carcinogenesis. Tissue microarray slides can be requested for exploratory, developmental as well as established research projects. Up to 4 array paraffin sections will be provided at no cost to a single investigator, but shipping charges will be covered by the investigator requesting the samples.  HNTAs and any related reagents are provided to the research community for research purposes only and their use for commercial purposes is prohibited.

Microbiology and Immunology Resources

Oral Pathogen Sequence Relational Database
A specialized database at the Los Alamos National Laboratory featuring multiple search and annotation features for the analysis of oral microbial genomes.

Microbial Large-Scale DNA Sequencing Projects

NIDCR Oral Microbe Microarray Initiative (NOMMI)
Pathogen Functional Genomics Resource Center - DNA Microarrays
This facility produces and distributes genomic DNA microarray slides (“chips”) for oral pathogens. The facility serves as an important resource to the infectious diseases community wishing to investigate the genomics of oral pathogens. To this end, the facility provides at no cost high quality microarrays to laboratories studying oral pathogens. See additional information and application instructions

Ribosomal Database Project-II Release 9
The Ribosomal Database Project (RDP) provides ribosome related data and services to the scientific community, including online data analysis and aligned and annotated 16S rRNA sequences. Release 9 contains 114,231 aligned and annotated bacterial small-subunit rRNA sequences, and is updated frequently.

Comprehensive Candida Albicans Database
NIDCR grantees recently launched a comprehensive database on the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans . Called the Candida Genome Database, this new online resource is freely available to all members of the research community. The database provides comprehensive literature curration that complements existing sequence-based annotation and provides centralized information, such as a gene-name registry, for the Candida research community. It will soon also offer a more extensive set of sequence retrieval and analysis tools. The database was described in detail in a recent special issue of the journal Nucleic Acids Research. See more about the Candida Albicans Database or visit the database web site at: www.candidagenome.org
