Sustaining a robust clinical research agenda and a caring patient atmosphere demands constant scrutiny. Committed to setting the national standard for the conduct of and training in clinical research, Clinical Center management has effectively guided the organization through many changes this past year.

Through the Clinical Center’s active support to implement new Institute clinical research programs, patient activity levels have increased. Focused efforts to invigorate clinical research within the intramural program began more than three years ago and have achieved significant results. Meanwhile, clinical departments have continued to meet the demand for new and increasing levels of specialized services for Institute research support and enhanced patient care.

Some of the Center’s more visible efforts include plans for a new Clinical Research Information System, which will become the electronic backbone to support research data collection; patient care documentation and resource consumption; and the development of strategies for optimal efficiency and occupancy of the new Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center, including shared multi-Institute patient care units and new and more efficient staffing models.

Enhanced customer service has been an especially strong priority initiative with the goal of creating an environment where respect and service are consistently demonstrated toward Clinical Center patients, visitors and co-workers. The Clinical Center management agenda has also broadened to include new programs addressing diversity management, outreach to minorities, quality of work life, and a new personnel system. Outreach activities remain prominent, including patient recruitment, alliances with local hospitals, and new collaborations. As always, a focus on patient safety and protection of human subjects remains an ongoing Clinical Center priority. Likewise, clinical research training initiatives have continued to thrive and expand.

The planning timeline and governance structures of the Clinical Center have adapted to requirements of the new NIH Funding Advisory Review Board. Meanwhile, operational efficiency remains a high management priority and efforts are ongoing to monitor and evaluate existing programs to enhance quality and achieve cost savings.

This profile reviews the Clinical Center’s achievements in 2001. The scientific future continues to hold great promise and the Center remains committed to providing a humane research and healing patient care environment.
