- Description:
- U.S. Surgeon General Luther L. Terry's original report on the health consequences of smoking, published in 1964, warned that smoking during pregnancy increased the risk of low birth weight and other complications in newborns. These dangers were confirmed by subsequent research. During the 1980s, it had become a major scientific argument in the campaign against smoking.
