During his long career as a pediatric surgeon, Koop invented or perfected, and described in academic articles such as this one, several surgical techniques for removing intestinal obstructions in newborns, including techniques for administering anesthesia in appropriate doses, for correcting esophageal atresia (where the esophagus is not connected to the stomach), and for repairing diaphragmatic hernia (where the abdominal organs push up into the chest cavity through a hole in the diaphragm).
