Summary

A scientific conference sponsored by: National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases National Institute on Aging Diabetes Mellitus Interagency Coordinating CommitteeDiabetes mellitus has become a common disease in elderly people, with almost 20 percent of those aged 65 years or older affected by the disease. Despite significant research advances, many questions about the pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment of diabetes in the older population remain unresolved. Increased focus on the problem of diabetes in the elderly is warranted. To address these issues, the conference on Diabetes and Aging will bring together experts in these areas to present the science of the topic of diabetes and aging, determine new research directions for understanding diabetes in older age, develop recommendations for needed research, and provide advice to the National Institutes of Health regarding its research agenda for diabetes in aging. Federal and other programs involved in the issues of diabetes and aging will be presented as part of the Diabetes Mellitus Interagency Coordinating Committee meeting.
