Request for Acceptance Letter for Program Project Grant (P01) Applications

All prospective applicants (revised or competing renewal applications) for a Program project Grant (P01) grant are asked to submit a Request for Acceptance letter to the NIEHS as soon as possible, but not later than four months before the intended receipt date (May 25). The purpose of the Request for Acceptance letter is to establish early in the planning process for a Program Project Grant application, an effective means of communication between NIEHS health science administrators and potential applicants. This communication between a potential principal investigator and program staff at the pre-application planning phase will serve to (1) advise the applicant concerning the areas of program interests of the NIEHS; (2) facilitate the receipt of a well organized, tightly focused application, and (3) ensure that the application conforms to established guidelines and criteria for a P01 application. For information on NIEHS health science administrators and their areas of responsibilities, please refer to http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/supported/dert/.

The P01 award is an assistance award for the support of a broadly based multi-disciplinary research program that has a well-defined central research focus or objective. It may also include support for common research resources (cores) required for the conduct of projects. Interrelationships among component projects are expected to result in a greater contribution to the program goals than if each project were pursued independently. There should be a clear synergism among all the components of the P01 program. For a detailed description of application guidelines, please see http://www.niehs.nih.gov/funding/grants/mechanisms/guidelines.cfm

NIEHS will accept P01 applications only for the September 25 Application Receipt Deadline.

The Request for Acceptance letter should include the following information:

  • A descriptive title of the proposed application;
  • the name, address and affiliation of all key personnel and participating institutions;
  • a proposed overall budget by year;
  • descriptive titles for each proposed research project and core; and
  • the date of proposed submission.

Pursuant to NIH policies, published March 20, 1998(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not98-030.html) Exit NIEHS, an applicant planning to submit an investigator-initiated new, competing continuation , competing supplement or any amended/revised version of the preceding grant application types requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs for any year, is advised to contact an NIEHS health science administrator before submitting the application. Furthermore, the applicant must obtain agreement from the health science administrator that the NIEHS will accept the application for consideration for an award. Finally, the applicant must identify, in the cover letter that is sent with the application, the health science administrator who agreed to accept assignment of the application. Applications submitted without prior approval from the health science administrator at NIEHS will be returned to the applicant without review.
