Virtual "IBD March on the Hill" Increases Funding for Digestive Disease Research

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America and Shire plc are joining forces to launch the first-ever virtual "Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) March on the Hill." The free program calls on Facebook users to take a virtual "step" around the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to help raise awareness and funds for IBD research. Shire will donate $1 per footstep to CCFA for research, education and support initiatives for each of the first 30,000 steps taken! Visit www.IBDMarchontheHill.com and take a step to support IBD research today, or read more about the program.

Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Swine Flu:
What Patients Need to Know

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation is closely monitoring releases of updated information on Swine Influenza (swine flu) in the U.S. and abroad, and is subsequently issuing guidance to the Crohn's and colitis community. A respiratory disease of pigs caused by the type A /H1N1 influenza virus, swine flu can cause regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of chronic medical conditions, like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. All individuals, including patients, can take the following simple steps to avoid germs, including swine flu. Wash your hands often with soap and water-or use sanitizing gels when hand washing is not available-to remove germs and prevent germs from spreading. Avoid people who are obviously ill, and most importantly, seek medical care and avoid crowds if you experience several of the following symptoms such as fever and chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, and fatigue. The Foundation does not anticipate change in program activity but for more information, visit www.cdc.gov or call CCFA's Information Resource Center at 888.MY.GUT.PAIN.

CCFA Honors Face the Nation Moderator Bob Schieffer

The Foundation honors Bob Schieffer, Moderator, Face the Nation and CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent, with its CCFA Public Awareness Broadcast Media Award, at its annual IBD Day on the Hill National Advocacy Conference this week. Over the past several decades, Mr. Schieffer has helped raise awareness of digestive disease to the public, and as a result, has helped to ease the stigma attached to Crohn's and colitis. The Foundation is proud to present this award to him for his dedication to raising public and patient awareness of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

We've included a flare symptoms tracker so you can keep a log of your symptoms and discuss them with your doctor or nurse. Download the brochure now, or order a printed copy online.

CCFA Receives Grant to Support Research Toward a Cure

The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation has been awarded a grant of $5.6 million from The Leona M. & Harry B. National Board Chair Addresses U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee:  Advocates for Funding

On March 18, Chairman of CCFA's National Board of Trustees, Gary Sinderbrand, spoke in Washington, D.C. before a United States House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on behalf of the 1.4 million Americans living with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Sinderbrand testified before the Subcommittee to urge them to increase National Institutes of Health funding for the 2010 fiscal year so that CCFA and other organizations can maximize efforts to fund critical research resulting in better therapies and ultimately a cure. The recommendations made by Sinderbrand on behalf of CCFA also included funding of an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Epidemiology Program to gain a better understanding of disease prevalence and demographics; and funding to support CCFA's efforts in establishing a Pediatric IBD Patient Registry that will expand epidemiologic, basic, and clinical research on the Crohn's and colitis pediatric population. Read about why CCFA is the leader in IBD research.

Veteran Hockey Player Shoots & Scores for UC

After being sidelined from his career due to the painful symptoms of ulcerative colitis in 2007, NHL player Fernando Pisani returned to the ice following an effective treatment plan that helped control his symptoms.
