Substance users with psychiatric comorbidity, especially those with cocaine or alcohol dependence, visit the emergency department significantly more often than those without psychiatric diagnosis, suggesting the emergency department may be an important site for intervention.

Pre-hospital treatment of the poisoned patient is safe and efficacious, with over half of patients discharged without transfer to more intensive care and antidotes administered to many of those treated in ambulances.
