Current Position:

Director, Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, & Metabolic Diseases



Current Portfolio/Responsibilities:

Responsible for selection and supervision of DDEM staff and for oversight of $640

   million in Federal funding of research in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Responsible for planning and implementation of multiple major clinical trials initiated by

   NIDDK and other components of NIH, with significant co-sponsorship from NIDDK.

Responsible for several aspects of trans-NIH coordination of diabetes research, as chair

   of the Diabetes Mellitus Interagency Coordinating Committee (DMICC).

Responsible for coordinating the trans-DHHS planning and implementation of a special

   appropriation for type 1 diabetes research, currently $150 annually.

Jointly with CDC, responsible for the development and implementation of activities of

   the National Diabetes Education Program.

Represent NIDDK in interactions with professional societies and voluntary groups and in

   a wide variety of forums and working groups.
