Comments Hexachlorophene was removed from the over-the-counter market in the 1970s after neurotoxic effects were reported. Studies showed that between 0.3% and 6% of photo patch tested patients were allergic to this substance. [Marks, p. 232-3] Asthma reported in hospital employee; [Malo] In high-dose animal studies, hexachlorophene causes testicular damage and birth defects. [Frazier, p. 271-2] Acute exposure may cause CNS effects; A skin sensitizer; May cause asthma; [ICSC]
