Agent Name o-Dichlorobenzene
Alternative Name 1,2-Dichlorobenzene
CAS Number 95-50-1
Formula C6-H4-Cl2
Major Category Solvents
Synonyms 1,2-Dichlorobenzene; Chloroben; Cloroben; DCB; Dichlorobenzene, ortho, liquid; Dilantin DB; Dilatin DB; Dizene; Dowtherm E; Orthodichlorobenzene; Orthodichlorobenzol; Special termite fluid; Termitkil; o-Dichlor benzol; o-Dichlorbenzol; o-Dichlorobenzene; o-Dichlorobenzol; [ChemIDplus] UN1591
Category Chlorinated Aromatic
Description Colorless to pale-yellow liquid with a pleasant, aromatic odor.(herbicide); [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses Used as a chemical intermediate, solvent, heat transfer liquid, deodorant, and insecticide; [ACGIH] Used as a degreasing agent, a paint solvent, paint remover, a cylinder lubricant, and a solvent for waxes, gums, resins, tars, rubber, oils, and asphalts; [HSDB]
Comments Liver and kidney injury occur in animal inhalation studies. Inhalation of saturated vapor by mice results in narcosis and death. Skin sensitization can develop after occupational exposure. [ACGIH] Inhalation of high concentrations may cause CNS effects; A skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritant; [ICSC]
Restricted Cancelled: no registered pesticide products in the USA; [HSDB]
Exposure Assessment
Skin Designation (ACGIH) No
TLV (ACGIH) 25 ppm
STEL (ACGIH) 50 ppm
PEL (OSHA)Ceiling(OSHA) = 50 ppm
MAK 10 ppm
IDLH (NIOSH) 200 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs Basis for original (SCP) IDLH: The chosen IDLH is based on the statement by ACGIH [1971] that 1,000 ppm was fatal to guinea pigs after 20 hours [Browning 1953]. ACGIH [1971] also reported that Cameron et al. [1937] found liver damage in animals after exposure for a few hours at 50 to 800 ppm. . . . Human data: Concentrations up to 100 ppm have been reported to have caused sporadic irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract [Elkins 1959].
Vapor Pressure 1.36 mm Hg
Odor Threshold Low 0.02 ppm
Odor Threshold High 50 ppm
RD50 182 ppm
Lethal Concentration LCLo (rats) = 821 ppm/7H
Explanatory Notes Detection odor threshold from AIHA (mean = 0.70 ppm); Flash point = 151 deg F;
