Dr. Lewis is director of the NIGMS Division of Cell Biology and Biophysics (CBB), where she oversees research and training grants that support basic studies in cell biology and biophysics. She also leads an NIH Roadmap for Medical Research initiative to develop high-resolution imaging probes to capture the actions of individual molecules in living cells. Before becoming CBB director, Lewis served as chief of the CBB Biophysics Branch, managing research programs in the fields of single-molecule biophysics, nanoscience, and the biophysical properties of nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid assemblies.

Prior to joining NIGMS in 1989, Lewis performed research on chromosome and chromatin structure and the regulation of gene expression in the physical chemistry section of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
