Category Glycidyl Ethers
Description Colorless liquid. [Note: A solid below 38 degrees F.] [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses Glycidyl ethers are used as reactive diluents in epoxy resins. [LaDou, p. 508] Allergic contact dermatitis in shoemakers; [Marks]
Comments PGE is a testicular toxin in male rats exposed by inhalation at 12 ppm for 19 days. [ACGIH] A skin irritant and sensitizer; [ICSC] Can cause narcosis, reproductive effects, and possible hematopoietic effects; [CAMEO] Animals have CNS depression and evidence of liver injury in high-dose studies. [HSDB]
Exposure Assessment
Skin Designation (ACGIH) Yes
TLV (ACGIH) 0.1 ppm
PEL (OSHA) 10 ppm
IDLH (NIOSH) 100 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs ACGIH [1971] reported that 10 rats exposed to 100 ppm phenyl glycidyl ether 7 hours/day for 50 days exhibited no immediately obvious signs of toxicity, and no deaths occurred [Hine et al. 1956].
Vapor Pressure 0.01 mm Hg
Lethal Concentration LC50 (rats) >100 ppm/8h
Explanatory Notes Flash point = 248 deg F;
